The Overview and Progress section provides a high level view of your business and how it‘s developing.
Businesses go through several stages of growth and successfully navigating these is more complex than most people think.
This section is aligned with our ART of Business Process.
Assess accurately
Realize the results that you want to achieve
and realize the options that you have available to you.
TRaction is defined as Towards Results action.
When we run the process we often find that the keys to future success are outside of the “field of vision” of the business owners. They don’t see them because they haven’t travelled this road before.
It’s not that they’re not working hard enough. It also doesn’t help much when people tell them to work smarter not harder. What exactly does that mean anyways? What works is a process that identifies what to do next to achieve the results that they are after.
It really helps to have the outside perspective of an experienced business professional as you develop your business. Someone who has built their own business before and advised other business owners as they built theirs.
We are trained to see things that others don’t and our approach makes your business building journey go more smoothly. We have a lot of the right kind of experience.
Goal Setting
Goal setting can be difficult. People who consistently set high goals will almost certainly fall short at some point in time. They might be making good progress while perceiving failure and then their motivation slides.
Shooting for the stars to hit the moon doesn’t work.
NASA certainly didn’t employ that strategy during the Apollo missions.
The Moon was always their designated target.
Setting realistic goals for yourself and ensuring that everyone in your company does so as well will increase the performance of your business. It takes some commitment and dedication to establish this into your organization’s culture.
Planning
When planning it is also good to remember a quote often used by the army.
“No plan survives contact with the enemy.”
The “enemy” of business planning is the real world.
That doesn’t mean that planning is worthless.
It means that once the plan is set in motion business owners have to be able to adapt to changing conditions and “think on their feet” while keeping the objective in mind.
It has been said that the Apollo missions were only on target 1% of the time.
Their journeys to the moon were a constant series of adjustments.
It is often quoted that 80% of businesses fail in the first 5 years. A recent study showed that of the businesses that survived 80% had written business plans. Planning is surely a success habit for business owners.
The current economy is challenging many business owners to adjust and adapt. Planning involves looking out the windshield into the future and setting realistic goals. It’s hard to drive while looking into the rearview mirror.
