Sometimes a little advice, consulting or training can go a long way towards achieving your goals. Other times it takes more work. You may want to hire a consultant to do some of the work directly.  This way you’ll get the results without without slowing down your day-to-day business.

Not All Small Business Consulting Companies are Created Equally

It’s a good idea to look for somebody who has walked the walk before and built their own successful company. The next big thing to look for is a proven small business consulting program that consistently delivers the results you’re after. A true professional will develop their systems and refine them until they consistently deliver good results. You should clearly see evidence of this.

A standard question that business-people ask consultants is: how much experience do you have in my industry? This is a legitimate question with two sides to the coin. Industry experts with specific knowledge have advantages especially for components like strategy, purchasing, pricing, and hiring.

Building a strong profitable company involves developing tools and abilities and then putting them into practice. Most entrepreneurs find the process much easier with the help of a company strength expert.

The surprise here is that it’s not an either or type of situation. If it makes sense you can split the project up and hire both types of experts. You’ll find a variety of small business consulting in Vancouver. The most experienced consulting companies will also offer solid on-line programs to clients around the world. To use a golfing analogy here, a PGA golfer has a professional caddy whose role is to know the courses, the club selections, and to keep the golfer’s mind focused during the game. PGA golfers also have a teaching professional whose role is to set up the practice plans that maintain and strengthen the golfer’s foundational skill sets – like the swing and their putting stroke.

Strong companies do good business while companies that aren’t built strong enough have difficulties trying to process the business and they endlessly struggle with symptoms.

Entrepreneurs who focus on strengthening their companies typically see their profits grow. Profits are the best fuel for growth. Consistently delivering a solid bottom line makes it much easier to build your company the way you want to. Isn’t that what we all want? It’s well worth taking the time to meet with Rock Solid Consultants in Vancouver and discover how they can help you transform your business into a strong profitable company.

  • Great blog post John! Here’s to an awesome 2014!

    Hi John,

Great post! I particularly like your comment, “A standard question that business-people ask consultants is: how much experience do you have in my industry? This is a legitimate question with two sides to the coin. Industry experts with specific knowledge have significant advantages especially for details like pricing and hiring. At the same time there are generalists who are experts in building strong companies.”

It appears that “generalists” in this context are specialists in building strong companies. Great work!
    Cheers,
    Erika

Great blog. Thanks for the reassurance, John. I’m normal as I frequently feel that I’m walking a tightrope. So how does consulting differ from mentoring? Or are they one and the same thing?

    • John Cameron

Typically a mentor is someone who has been down the road you are on before. The role is akin to an adviser who can also make contacts for you. It isn’t a hands on approach.

A mentor may advise you to develop a marketing plan or even to hire a consultant to do it for you if it’s not an area of strength for you. The same goes for financial information systems. This is more likely because the mentor needs information and will want to see high quality reports.

Consultants typically do hands on work on projects similar to the above.
Systemizing you company is another good example.

An experienced consultant can also act as a mentor, but there may be a conflict of interest if they are recommending more work for themselves.

    Hi John,
Coaching and consulting are quite complimentary and I enjoyed reading your view of how a great consulting firm is created and run. You listed great pro’s and con’s and I’ll be back to read more in the future.
